Definition
The word "anthro" originally comes from "anthropomorphism", which refers to the attribution of human characteristics and qualities to non-human beings or objects. In this case, it's a kind of personification of various animals and creatures. The words "anthro" and "furry" can also be used interchangably.

These these creatures usually walk bipedally and upright, and they also possess human emotions and thoughts as well as the instincts of animals. This concept has been around since mankind existed, and some of these include the Jackal-headed Anubis in Egyptian mythology and the werewolf in medieval European culture.
